Graham Howard ukpianos.co.uk editor

Graham Howard, piano advisor: grahamhoward@ukpianos.co.uk

"When asked to recommend a piano for around the £500 mark - mostly for children to learn and progress on - I advise the Broadway B1. This piano has a slim, compact cabinet and a full, rich piano tone. The key touch is fully-weighted and responsive. Very good value for money!", Graham Howard - Piano Advisor.

What our customers say...

1) "Very pleased with the Broadway B1 purchased and excellent service"

Wanting to buy a first but good piano for both myself and son to learn on took quite a lot of investigating. This uk pianos website has the clearest and most relevant information you will need to make the right choice
based on your budget and requirements. Very pleased with the Broadway B1 piano purchased and excellent service. Myself and both my children are enjoying learning this new skill with an excellent instrument.

2) "I recommend both UK Pianos shop and manufacturer"

We needed an electric piano for the family to learn on. Choose the Broadway B1 from UK Pianos after a bit of searching,. Service was great and includes on site warranty work if required for 3 years which gives me piece of mind but the piano appears to be a solid piece of technology. I recommend both UK Pianos shop and manufacturer.

3) "Fantastic Piano and Service"

We bought our daughter a Broadway B1 digital piano in satin black from UK Pianos just before Christmas. The service from UK Piano's was fantastic, from choosing the right piano right through to delivery.

Assembly

The piano comes flat-packed and is easy to assemble (instructions in English provided). The keyboard, electronics and cables are all fixed in - all you need to do is assemble the base. There are four screws that fix the base to the keyboard, four to fix the base together and a few smaller screws to fit the back board. The screw holes are already made and no gluing is required. Even the screw driver is provided! We do advise two people to do the job though - purely because of the keyboard's weight - It's heavy and safer to have a helping hand when lifting it on to the base.

If you would like us to assemble the piano then please call 020 8367 2080.

"The Broadway B1 feels like an acoustic piano and sounds like one. I am very happy with it"

Hi Graham

Thank you for your email and also your guide to buying a digital piano. After spending a great deal of time reading all your comments, I felt I was ready to make a decision.

I traveled down to Enfield last Tuesday. All the ladies were very helpful and pleasant. After receiving your guide to buying a digital piano, I bought the Broadway B1. It was delivered on Saturday by a very helpful young man who assembled the piano for me. He even phoned ahead telling me what time he would be arriving. That is great customer service. I am sorry I do not have his name. All the staff at UK Pianos made the purchase a pleasure.

I have played the piano for many years and this is my second digital piano. The one I replaced I have had since 1988. Digital pianos have come a long way since then. The Broadway B1 feels like an acoustic piano and sounds like one. I am very happy with it.

Thank you, Graham, and the staff at UK Pianos.

"The piano has a super touch and sound"

Hello Graham,

Your booklet was invaluable, and after phoning you we finally decided to follow your advice and purchase the Broadway B1. This arrived very quickly, and although unfortunately there was minor cosmetic damage caused by manufacturing faults, we were delighted with your rapid response to this. The piano has a super touch and sound.

Thank you for giving us such good advice and service all the way through.

Customer Comments and Questions

"Our only concerns with the Broadway are the Warranty and repairs"

Is the warranty through the manufacturer or through UK Pianos and also with us being on the Isle of Man we are concerned that should we have a problem with it or need a repair doing, that there is no one on the Island to do so, can you tell us were we would stand should this occur.

We read through your do's / don'ts this morning and had narrowed the choice to the Broadway B1 as you've suggested or the Yamaha YDP141. The price on the Broadway is very competitive, but we keep coming back to the 'what if ' worry.

I look forward to hearing from you in reference to shipping costs and hope that you can help us out with our above concerns.

Kind Regards

Helen

Reply/ Hi Helen

The warranty is with ourselves.

I understand your concern because of the remote
place you live, but if you have a warranty claim
then we'd probably send you out a replacement piano
rather than send a technician from the main land.

The warranty claims we get from the Broadway B1
are less than 1%. It's well made and the packaging
is strong. So I can’t foresee any issues. But you
have my word we'll sort things out if you do.

Graham Howard

"I think the Broadway B1 might do the trick - but concerned it may lack watts?"

Basically I am a music graduate and teacher (Semi pro French Horn player) and grade 7 pianist looking to do grade 8 before I retire.

Due to a change in personal circumstances my lovely 1930s art deco Brasted upright will not fit in my new accomodation. Am looking for something to practice on that will give musical satisfaction under about £800.
Dont like yamaha electric pianos at all - although my 1980s PF85 now does sterling work in a practice room at school!

Think the Broadway B1 might do the trick - but I am concerned it may lack watts?

Don't want styles and beats etc as I hear them all at school - but a simple recor feature would be good to practice piano duets with myself!

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks, Paul

Reply/ Hi Paul

Yes, the Broadway B1 is a good piano for the price.

I like the key touch. It is fully-weighted and feels
close to playing a real piano.

The sound output is much louder than other pianos
with a similar wattage. It actually plays like a piano
that has double the wattage, this is because the
speaker system is well designed.

Quality speakers do make quite a difference to
volume output and tone.

Yours pianistically,

Graham Howard

"What if it goes wrong after the 3 year warranty?"

I have 2 concerns … one is resale. It is an unknown brand and is sold nowhere else it seems.
Two is repairs. What if it goes wrong after the 3 year warranty? Who will repair it and with what parts?

Thanks, Nicole

Reply/ Hi Nicole

Broadway pianos have only been available in the UK since 2011.
This is the reason there aren’t many sellers.

They’re really nice pianos and will become popular over
time as more retailers start to sell them.

You can read lots of reviews here:

If it goes wrong outside the warranty period then
just contact us. We keep all parts.

"I would like to buy something that looks sounds and feels like a piano"

Hi Graham,

I have really enjoyed and apreciated the advice that you have given in your book "7 things to know before you buy a digital piano". And yet I still am in need of your thoughts and suggestions.

I am not a piano player as such but write my own songs and like to put piano onto these when recording them at home. What I am looking for is a digital piano that gives me the flexibility to alter the piano's sounds to suit the song that I have written.

As I am not a piano player I do not feel that I can justify spending huge amounts of money on a really impressive intrument but would still like to buy something that looks sounds and feels like a piano.

Any suggestions at what I should be considering?

Many thanks
Peter

Reply/ Hi Peter

The Broadway B1 will do everything you want.

As well as being a good piano with a realistic
key touch and nice sound, it is up-to-date
with technology.

"I am delighted with the instrument and the sound quality"

Hi Graham

I bought a Broadway B1 from you and it arrived on Saturday. I am delighted with the instrument and the sound quality. However, it is A LOT heavier than I anticipated and I think I may have made a mistake and should have gone for a portable digital piano as I need to transport it back and forth to church.

I am wondering if I could return it and buy a keyboard instead? I am looking at the Classenti P1, which appears to be about half the weight of the Broadway B1. I love the sound and touch of the Broadway and wondered how much difference there is in between the two? I realise that I may have to sacrifice some sound quality, but I am wondering how much. Are the instruments comparable in terms of sound and touch or is there a real ‘drop’ in quality with the Classenti P1? Or would you recommend something other than the Classenti that is equally portable? (Maybe the Korg SP250?). Do either of these pianos have record/playback? Do they have USB ports for me to record onto?

Many thanks

Helen

Reply/ Hi Helen

The Classenti P1 is about half the weight
of the Broadway B1.
It has a heavier key touch than the B1.
The sound is richer and more natural.

Let me know if you would like to swap it.

Yours pianistically,

Graham Howard

Further Comment/ Hi Graham

Thanks for this. Despite liking the Broadway B1 very much, I think I probably need to swap to a more portable piano

"Can we get away with anything cheaper than the Broadway B1?"

Hi,

I have been reading your guide to buying a digital piano which is very helpful. We had originally looked at buying a second hand piano but now think a digital will be better. We have looked at second hand digitals but are put off by the age they generally seem to be.

My 14 year old son has been playing a keyboard for a number of years. He has recently switched to piano lessons. This is because he wants to take GCSE music & then go on to A' Level Music Technology. As we only have one local college that does Music Technology (& it is very popular) they require some kind of proof of his keyboard skills. We are now going the piano exam route so that he is well prepared & of course we now need something more than his Yamaha keyboard. He does want to be able to 'hook' it up to his computer so this is a main criteria.

From reading your guide, we have come to the conclusion that the Broadway B1 might be his best option. My main concerns are then
a) Will this be good enough for him?
b) Can we get away with anything cheaper? I did notice that you have an ex-display B1, could this be an option?
c) His piano teacher said that he would be ok up to a Grade 5 on a digital, not sure whether he is likely to go any higher but if he did would he cope on the B1?

I would be grateful for any further advice/thoughts you can give us.

Many thanks

Jo Gordon

Reply/ Hi Jo

Yes, the Broadway B1 is an excellent choice.

This piano has a fully-weighted key touch
and a really nice piano tone.

I recommend it up to grade 6. So your son
Can use this for many years.

It also has a USB computer connection.

We have a 6 month old ex-display Broadway B1
in black satin going for £470.

Please call me on 020 8367 2080 if you
would like to reserve it.

If you do want to look at cheaper pianos then
please be careful. Nearly all of them have only
a medium-weighted key touch (even though
they state ‘fully-weighted’ on the description).

Yours pianistically,

Graham Howard

Hi Graham, the information in your digital piano buyer's guide was invaluable and stopped us making a mistake in our choice of digital piano.

We are going to buy the broadway b1, it is for Harley our seven year old son to play.

Many thanks
Amanda

Hi Graham,

Thank you for your advice which has really been helpful and your quick response.
We will be buying the Broadway B1 for our son as this sounds like the better choice to learn the piano on.

Thank you once again.

Hi Graham,

My budget is very limit so I was looking for a Broadway B1, however I really want a harpsichord voice.

Many Regards
Sarah

Reply/ Hi Sarah

Although the Broadway B1 doesn’t have the
harpsichord as a main sound immediately
accessible on the piano, it is one of the GM sounds.

This means you can get the harpsichord sound
by connecting to a computer.

The harpsichord sound can then be programmed
into the piano so it’s available for you anytime.

The Broadway B1 has a total of 128 GM sounds
than can easily be accessed by simply connecting
to a computer through the USB slot on the piano.

Yours pianistically,

Graham Howard

Hi Graham,

Thank you for your advice. I would certainly consider getting the broadway B1 as it has great reviews and although just over budget could last us a longer time and serve us well.

Dear Graham,

I found your howard score helpful - and I'm fairly sure by now that it's the Broadway B1 I want. I now only need to find out whether I can fit it into my room at university.

You have been extremely helpful, recently and at all times in the past, and such excellent service deserves endorsement. Thank you very much.
