Hello Graham,
Thanks for all the advice and emails.
However, I live in Spain and I’m a synth freak! (well a fan of synths anyway)
I must tell you though that YOUR ADVICE was taken by one of my students. (I’m an English Teacher)
She bought a Yamaha electric piano because of what you had written.
However, if I may, I’d like to also pass on some info to you which you might find interesting (or perhaps not!) I’ll let you decide on that one! No obligations though!
As I’m a synth freak, I’m crazy about Kurzweil. You mentioned the old Kurzweil piano and that you preferred the Yamaha, so my student bought the Yamaha. Remember, we are talking about Madrid, Spain etc….
However, Kurzweil have bought out a new electric piano, and this one is based on the PC3 Synth Engine!
Obviously this new one is miles better than the old one. I was trying to convince my student to try out the new Kurzweil, but it wasn’t in the local area, so she couldn’t. So I would like to suggest, again (take it or leave it), trying the new Kurzweil based on PC3 technology!
I think you will notice the difference etc… I’m trusting in Kurzweil’s reputation here as a Piano maker and as an excellent Synth technologist although I haven’t had a chance to play one yet!

“Great Sound”
Having tried many digital pianos, the Kurzweil ka90 is simply the best action (the keys bounce back in a beautiful active but smooth way, giving a realistic grand piano feel and sound. Superb tonal sounds through the keyboard, with great resonance, a joy to listen to. I have never experienced on a digital piano, having tried pianos which are very expensive (Yamaha, Kawai, Korg etc).
The price I paid was around £440 which is a basement price, (tried other makes for £1500 with inferior actions and muted sounds). Remarkable and makes playing a joy. It reminds me of playing a Bechstein piano. Thanks to Kurzweil. By the way, I hope this may be of use to someone looking for a digital piano, best wishes from Jon.

“Looking for a decent second hand digital piano”
Dear Graham,
I am looking to buy a digital piano. I played as a kid and maybe got to Grade 1 or 2 standard but I continued to love messing around on my piano at my parents house. My children are vaguely interested in learning to play now and have enjoyed playing on the Ipad apps that can teach you to play. My existing digital piano has broken and I was never very happy with it. It is a Yamaha P70.
I’d love to try your rent to buy or buy a good condition 2nd hand digital piano and am happy to pay up to £1000.
Could you let me know what you have in stock that you would recommend.
We are based in Bristol so probably won’t be able to pop in to try anything

Two in particular I recommend for you are the
Kurzweil M110 and MP120 models.

Both Kurzweils have a similar key feel… they are
responsive and a have a nice full key weight (resistance)
making them suitable for playing up to grade 8 level.
Their tone quality is natural and warm, and the
Kurzweil MP120 has an even fuller, more resonant
sound due to its larger acoustic box and bigger speakers.
