Why Do Pianos Go out of Tune?
There are many factors that can affect the tuning of your piano. Changes in the atmosphere can affect the tension of the strings, humidity makes the piano go sharp and dryness makes the piano go flat. These processes can be happening simultaneously in your piano, resulting in an uneven pitch. One of the most common questions we get about piano tuning is this: “Why has the bass on my piano gone out of tune?”. What usually happens is that the pitch remains more stable in the bass section because of heavier strings. The centre of the piano changes more dramatically, where the strings cross the middle of the soundboard. This unevenness is perceived as the bass being “out of tune”.
Care of The Piano
The cost of a piano tuning can vary from £80 to £150. A piano needs to be tuned frequently. Twice per year is normal. Fitting a humidifier will help look after the piano and it will also help tuning stability. Ask your piano tuner about this.

Questions and Answers
I am looking to potentially buy an upright piano from Barnet EN4 (off eBay). If all goes well, I’d like to move it to our house in Elsenham CM22.
Could you let me know if this is something you can help with, to move it for us and tune it? How much would you quote?

If you’d like us to visit the location in Barnet first
to check it over, then the cost is £65.
This is a complete inspection of the piano’s frame,
sound board, strings, tuning pins and mechanism
— like an AA car check.
I advise doing this, as the cost of moving or disposing
of a piano can be costly.
Piano moving, assuming ground floor to ground floor, is
our standard rate of £185 + vat.
Tuning is £125 (including vat).
If the piano is very flat (i.e. hasn’t been tuned in years) and
requires a pitch raise, then the additional tuning cost is £65.
Just let us know if you would like to go ahead.

I have inherited a piano and would like to get it tuned. I live in Yarnton, Oxford. I wanted to enquire to your cost and availability.

The cost of tuning is £95.
If it’s a long way out of tune (i.e. hasn’t been tuned
for over 2 years), then it will most likely need an
extra pitch raise. The cost of this is £50 on top
of the tuning fee.
We don’t have any availability until March.
It’s really busy at the moment.
